Biography
Hugo Latorre was born in Tandil, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started studying Argentinean Folk Dance at the tender age of eight. Six years later, he began his professional career dancing and playing the “bombo” (drums) in various theatres, on television, and in the most popular venues of Buenos Aires.
At the young age of seventeen, he danced alongside Mario Machaco and performed at the world-famous Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires with the much acclaimed folk ballet company of Santiago Ayala (El Chucaro),
Not long afterwards, Hugo created his own folk production and began a 3 year tour throughout Argentina presenting his company,”Grupo Malon Argentino”.
Following his tour, he extends his dance vocation fusing his talents in the world of tango; this was a natural progression on the road to his highly successful performing career.
The list of famous tango composers and orchestras with whom he has shared the stage includes the legendary Astor Piazzola, the revered Anibal Troilo, as well as the highly-respected Atilio Stamponi, Jose Basso, Panchito & Nolo Cao, Antonio Agri and Alfredo De Angelis, Jose Colangelo and Sexteto Tango.
A consummate performer and crowd-pleaser, Hugo Latorre has danced on the same stages with the most renowned of tango dancers including Gloria & Eduardo, Juan Carlos Copes & Maria Nieves, Nelida & Nelson, Elvira & Virulazo, Carlos Gavito, Carlos & Maria Rivarola, “Tito” Luciardo as well as venerated singers such as Roberto Goyeneche, Edmundo Rivero, Rubén Juarez, Roberto Rufino, “Tita” Merello, and Hector Gagliardi.
In 1977 he joined The Argentinean Gauchos with Washington de los Santos and Juan Santillan (Diablito) performing in “Hallelujah Hollywood” at the grand opening of the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and continuing in Reno, Nevada with “Hello, Hollywood Hello”. Hugo’s long Las Vegas career has seen him dance on the same stage with Siegfried and Roy, John Denver, Dean Martin, Liza Minnelli, among many. For the past 25 years, he has performed at major hotels like The Dunes, Stardust, Sands, Bally’s, Las Vegas Hilton, Flamingo Hilton, Tropicana, Sahara and Rivera’s Splash Show.
A talent such as Hugo’s could not be limited to the footlights; consequently, Hugo Latorre has designed the choreography of many shows and has produced the Las Vegas Tango Congresses for seven consecutive years, 2000 to 2007.
Hugo, while continuing to perform, choreograph and produce throughout his long career, determined to expand his knowledge and natural talent in the dance arena of Argentine Tango, searched for and received further coaching from such talents as Puppy Castello, El Tete, Osvaldo Sotto, Carlos Perez, Nito and Elba, Nelson Avila and Cacho Dinzel.
Expanding his performing to coaching and teaching other dancers to become professional Gaucho dancers, he most recently coached a troop of dancers in Australia with his own comedy show. Hugo’s passion for the dance has taking him to reveal and share his knowledge by instructing new dance students in the most unaltered and true style of Argentine Tango. His Tango classes expand further than teaching a tango step and its technique. Hugo also introduces the value embedded in the comprehension of musicality, the importance of understanding the tango roots, its history and shares his never ending fervor and excitement for this captivating dance.
Hugo Latorre is presently performing in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood in the V Theater with David Saxe Productions, The Ultimate Variety Show featuring The Crazy Gauchos; the longest shown act in Las Vegas.
